Patriots season to begin vs. Steelers
Super Bowl XLIX champions New England Patriots will begin their title defense against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 10 to kick off the 2015 NFL season.
MIT men’s baseball crushes Wheaton
Hayden Cornwell ’15 belted a three-run home run and went on to drive in six runs in the game to help MIT overcome and early deficit and score a 12-4 victory over Wheaton College in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action. The win pulled the Engineers to just a half game behind the Lyons in the NEWMAC East Division standings.
Women’s lacrosse sweeps Emerson Freshman scores five goals to lead Engineers to 19-8 victory
Trailing by one goal late in the first half, MIT rattled off six unanswered goals as it went on to defeat Emerson College, 19-8, in a NEWMAC women’s lacrosse game on Saturday. Emily Young ’18 led all players with seven points on five goals and two assists to go along with a game-high eight draw controls for the Engineers (13-2, 6-1 NEWMAC). Junior Tayllar Righini paced the Lions (8-5, 3-4 NEWMAC) with three goals and two assists.
Baseball scores four times in first inning of 7-5 victory
MIT scored four times in the first inning and then held off WPI down the stretch to take 7-5 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball victory Tuesday afternoon. Hayden K. Cornwell ’15 drove in three runs for the Engineers while Alex Venditti drove in a pair for WPI.
Women’s lacrosse earns 15-9 victory
The MIT women’s lacrosse team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule by defeating Gordon College, 15-9, last Friday night. Emily J. Young ’18 led all players with five goals and added three draw controls for the Engineers, who improved to 10-2 and generated the program’s first back-to-back 10-win seasons. Jessica Castelline paced the Fighting Scots with three goals and an assist as their ledger lowered to 7-6.
MIT sweeps doubleheader to conclude Babson series
MIT completed its three-game New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball series against Babson College with a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon. A five-run, eighth inning was the difference in an 8-4 win in game one, while Nicholas J. Locascio ’16 picked up his first win of the season in game two as he blanked the Beavers over the first eight innings in a 6-3 victory.
April’s Player of the Month: Maryann Gong ’17
The Tech’s April Player of the Month is Maryann Gong ’17. Gong was recently named the NCAA Division III Women’s Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. She won the 3000m race at the national meet to go along with a third place finish in the mile race and helped her team clinch second in the relay. She was also instrumental in leading the women’s track and field team to victory in the Division III regional meet.
Men’s volleyball team wins annual Scramble Tournament
In their final outing of the season, the MIT men’s volleyball team captured their second straight MIT Scramble Tournament title on Saturday, April 4. The Engineers blanked Lehman College (25-12, 25-13, 25-17), Bard College (25-17, 25-14, 25-20), and Endicott College (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) to finish the year with a record of 18-11. Alex Klein ’15 was named the Tournament MVP while Brendan Chang ’16 secured a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Men’s tennis blanks Springfield 9-0
MIT swept the doubles matches against Springfield College and used the momentum to complete a 9-0 win over the Pride in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men’s tennis action. MIT improved to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC while Springfield fell to 4-5 and 1-1.
Can the Red Sox rebound in 2015?
After a forgettable first-to-worst season in 2014, the Red Sox are looking to bounce back for the second time in three years. After finishing with the highest slugging percentage in 2013, the Red Sox finished 14th in the 15-team American League in that same category. Quite simply, the bats that came alive the year before were largely quiet either due to injury (Pedroia, Napoli, Victorino) or were downright unproductive for large parts of the season (Boagerts, Nava, Gomes).
Fencer wins Elite 89 Award
Carrying a 5.0 GPA, Benjamin Lin ’17 was presented with the NCAA Elite 89 Award at the NCAA Fencing National Championship held this weekend at Ohio State. He is the second consecutive fencer to receive this accolade after Joey Rafidi ’14 was tabbed for this honor last year. Since the Elite 89 program was established during the 2009-10 academic year, the Engineers have collected eight awards.
Men’s lacrosse tops Coast Guard 14-6
In a game played in steady snow throughout, MIT and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy opened the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men’s lacrosse season on Saturday afternoon (March 28). The Engineers scored five goals in the first period and never looked back as they took a 14-6 victory over the Bears.
Women’s lacrosse suffers first defeat
Following a tight first half, Springfield College outscored MIT, 11-6, in the second frame to secure a 16-9 victory in a NEWMAC women’s lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Senior Michelle Dorsey paced the Pride (8-2, 2-0 NEWMAC) with five goals and two assists while Emily Young ’18 led the way for the Engineers (7-1, 1-1 NEWMAC) with fours goals and five draw controls.
Gymnastics club hosts invitational
The MIT Gymnastics Club hosted the Alumni Invitational Gymnastics Meet on Saturday, March 14, at the DuPont Gymnasium at MIT.
Athletes earn All-America honors
MIT’s Cimran Virdi ’16 and Maryann M. Gong ’17 highlighted MIT’s performance at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend, earning individual titles in the pole vault and 3,000-meter events, respectively. Both student-athletes collected All-America honors with their first-place performances.
Figure skating ends term with showcase
The MIT Figure Skating club hosted their annual figure skating exhibition this past Saturday, March 14, at the Johnson Athletic Center Ice Arena. This season-ending exhibition event witnessed a number of alumni performing alongside the current MIT figure skating team.
Lin ’17 NCAA bound
Benjamin Lin ’17 and Tzer Wong ’18 will represent the sabre squad at the NCAA Fencing Championship to be held March 19-20 at Ohio State. This is the second time in program history the Engineers will have multiple competitors in the same weapon at the championship as they had two sabre entries in 2001.
