CPW to be cool and wet, with colder weather to return next week

After some nice weather earlier this week, we were reminded that it is still spring in Boston and the weather can change on a dime. With an easterly sea breeze blowing in from off the ocean, we often get engulfed in a marine layer — a cool mass of air that forms over the ocean. As we experienced on Wednesday, this means sunny and warm temperatures in the 70s in the morning followed by a rapid drop into the 50s once the wind switches from the southwest to the east. The same sort of phenomenon happened again today, April 15, and will occur again tomorrow, April 16. Forecast confidence is quite low for daily high temperatures, which are highly dependent on what time the marine layer will win over the warmer inland flow. Additionally, some rain showers will move through the area early Friday morning and again later in the afternoon. Unfortunately, this CPW will not be all sunshine and warmth but instead, rather rainy and overcast, with temperatures running below slightly below average. Some would say this better represents the typical Boston weather.
We will dry out on Saturday, but it will stay cool with an easterly wind and substantial cloud cover. On Sunday, a large cold front will move across the region, bringing steady rain for most of the day and cooling things down even more. By Monday morning, the temperature will be in the low 30s. For Patriot’s Day, the sun will finally return. However, it will feel more like March, with a high only in the 40s. The temperature may go below freezing Monday night, a rare occurrence this time of year. By middle to late next week, seasonal temperatures are expected to return with highs running near 60°F and lows near 40°F.
